FRIENDSHIP SCHOOL-ROUSSE Project

The project was put into practice by “Future for Bulgaria” Foundation with the financial support of Phare 2000 ACCESS PROGRAMME and was carried out on the territory of Rousse. It stared in the beginning of December 2002 and lasted ten months. Our partners were the Rousse municipality, the Bulgarian Red Cross Rousse, and the Romanian Youth Association “Ion Vinea” - Giurgiu. The participants were teenagers from the Secondary School of Mathematics “Baba Tonka”, “Rajna Gateva” Orphanage for girls, “Dimitar Basarbovski” Orphanage for boys and students from the Faculty of Pedagogy at Rousse University. Equality of sexes /50 % women and 50 % men/, as well as secured quota for representatives of minority groups were taken as the basis of the project.

A leaflet promoting the project was published and distributed in the above-mentioned educational institutions. The participants, as well as the tutors, the group leaders and the trainers for the different activities were selected after the conducted interviews.

Officially the lessons in FRIENSHIP SCHOOL started in the beginning of February 2003 in Rousse.

The main idea was to include the 60 young people aged between 14 and 18 and divided into four groups in a number of activities during the Saturdays, namely: sports / at choice-fitness, swimming, chess, football /, computer skills classes, English, civic education, sexual health education - AIDS/HIV and sexually transmitted diseases problems, drugs abuse and prevention, training in First Aid and Water Life Saving, thematic video projections with movies concerning human relationships and follow-up discussions for each group, going to discotheques, joint birthday parties and a one week holiday at the Black Sea. We would like to draw your attention to the fact that the children represent two groups placed under the special legal protection by the Child Protection Act /children at risk and talented children/. The various activities aimed at broadening the children’s knowledge and improving their social communication and teamwork skills. The project provided opportunities for personal expression, asking questions and looking for answers, discussions and creating new friendships.

Important part in the superintendence, consulting and assessing the work had the Regional and National Coordinators, the Internal Psychologist, the students from the Faculty of Pedagogy /who were also group leaders/, the trainers in the different activities, the headmasters of the three educational institutions, experts from Rousse Municipality and from the Romanian organization “Ion Vinea”. They all took part in the Advisory Committee together with the mayor of Rousse and the President of “Future for Bulgaria” Foundation.

On their visits to Rousse the representatives of the Romanian organization “Ion Vinea”- Giurgiu were also acquainted with the activities on the project and had the opportunity to make recommendations and to put into practice a similar project in the circumstances existing in their country.

The pupils who graduate received official certificates. We sincerely hope that this interesting idea will prove the need for putting into practice innovative forms of working with young people from the stated groups and we also believe that it will serve as the basis for future activities along those lines.
